Kitchen Adventures with Sugar Blend

This post was written in collaboration with Merisant Philippines,  makers of Sugar Blend and Equal Low Calorie Sweetener. All opinions stated here are mine.

Kitchen Adventures will always have a special place in my heart. It might sound cheesy  but this very thing livens up my passion in whipping up meals for my loved ones.  We have favorites that we cook on a regular basis, but sometimes, I get bored with preparing the same old dishes. I want to shake things up a little,  just a little bit.

Last year,  the folks at Merisant Philippines sent me this lovely basket of sweeteners that was filled with pouches of Sugar Blend and packets of Equal Low Calorie Sweetener. I was delighted with the package that we received for I was,  at that time,  on a baking spree. I shared about my happy mail on social media. Among the reactions that I received was a couple of precautions about the effects of using an artificial sweetener. I then searched for anything about Sugar Blend and Equal and found an article published on the National Geographic about sugar substitutes. I find that article useful and informative since I was planning to test Sugar Blend for baking and cooking. Now, to make things clear: I am writing this blog post to see how Sugar Blend will do with what I will prepare for my kitchen adventures. Will it make my output more palatable and visually appealing? That’s what I am about to share with you. If you are concerned with using sweeteners other than pure sugar, it is best that you talk to your doctor about it.

Sugar Blend and Equal Gift Basket

Let’s get to know Sugar Blend first. As indicated in its 400g pouch, Sugar Blend is a blend of sugar and sucralose, suitable for cooking and baking. It sweetens like sugar but with 50% less calories. Based on the serving comparison with sugar, 1 teaspoon of Sugar Blend (16kCal) is as sweet as 2 teaspoons of sugar (32 kCal). Merisant Philippines positions Sugar Blend as a versatile and affordable sweetener product that can provide healthy sweetness to your usual food and drinks.

I have tried Sugar Blend when I made my family’s favorites – French Toast for my husband and Oatmeal Cookies for our little boy :)

French Toast - Ingredients

French Toast
Ingredients:
5 slices of bread
2 eggs
1/2 cup of fresh milk
2 tbsp of butter
1 tbsp of cooking oil
A dash of ground cinnamon
A dash of salt
Preparation:
1. Beat the eggs. Add salt, milk and butter. Mix until well blended.
2. Heat pan with oil.
3. Dip bread onto the mix one at a time.
4. Fry each side until lightly browned.
5. Serve with a dash of cinnamon.

Verdict: With Sugar Blend, the French Toast that I prepared turned out fine but my husband still prefers that I use brown sugar for his toasts.

Oatmeal Cookies with Sugar Blend

Oatmeal Cookies

I was craving for oatmeal cookies – the freshly baked ones that I used to get from cafes. I didn’t have the leisure of going to coffee shops at that time so I decided to make my own batch of oatmeal cookies. It was a good thing that we already have the Quaker’s Quick Cooking Oats on stock. At that time, my husband have been eating oats for breakfast. I just went to the Quaker’s Oats website and found this recipe. From the recipe, I substituted granulated sugar with Sugar Blend and used half of the required amount. I also omitted the cinnamon and nutmeg since I’m not fond of them. I actually made two batches of these cookies – bite-sized and cafe-sized (if there is such a term).

Verdict: I liked the way our first Oatmeal Cookies turned out. It’s sooo good that my son nibbled on the cookies after they barely cooled off on the rack! We shared some to my sister and my niece and they too loved our freshly baked cookies. I was so happy with the results that I made more the following week :)

With how my cooking and baking turned out, I am sure to use Sugar Blend on most of my dishes again. I like that I only need to use half of what the recipe requires for the sugar since Sugar Blend sweetens the same way as the regular sugar but with less calories – healthier and cost-effective.

Also, with the easy-to-pour pouch of Sugar Blend, I didn’t have to transfer its contents to another container. It’s easy to store too since it has a twist cap. It’s convenient enough to use for cooking without the hassle of spills.

Sugar Blend is available in leading supermarkets nationwide. At SM, it’s on the same shelf were the bottles of honey are.

I Spy With My Little Eye

Recently, my three-year old says that phrase whenever I ask him to look for something. He got that from one of the episodes of Barney’s – the one about counting.

One time, I asked him to help me look for my inhaler inside our bedroom.

Me: Anak, please help Mommy find my inhaler.

L: (turns his back on me) I spy with my little eye…..

Me: (in an effort to help him say it) I spy with my little eye, something white…..

L: (rummages through his clothes drawer and pulls out something) Here you go, Maddie*!

*My son has been calling me Maddie instead of Mommy. I find it unique and cute so I don’t correct him. Also, I find it useful when we’re out because I know that only my son would call me that.

He smiled and gave me my missing inhaler. I went to his side and found my headband, hair tie, a missing page from his book, our masking tape, and other little toys nestled on top of his folded clothes.

Later that afternoon, I have observed that whenever I would tell him to go downstairs with me, he would clean up whatever is lying on the floor near my side of the bed and put them in that same drawer.

My little boy never fails to amuse me!

2016 MBP Gift Swap: Gift Giving with a Twist

I’m happy to have joined the MBP Gift Swap, a first for our community, Mommy Bloggers Philippines. It’s like Secret Santa on a higher level. We must buy a gift that would reflect our blog and personality. I have simplified this rule to make it a bit easier for me to pick a gift for my MBP Gift Swap Partner – get something that I myself would love to receive. After deciding on what to give our partners (which should also be at the prescribed monetary value), we must ship them out not later than December 10. By December 15, all of the participants in the Gift Swap must have already received our corresponding gifts. I confess that I send out mine at the last minute. It was a good thing that LBC is so reliable that Gracie got my gift by December 12 :)

As my blog post title says, this gift giving activity has a twist and it is equally exciting and challenging! Upon receiving our gifts, we must blog and share about it on social media. We need to share our MBP Gift Swap experience, the stuff we got, and tell something about the sender. Our posts about the gift swap must be published not later than December 20. From December 21 to 23, our sponsors will judge our blog posts according to blog style and relevance.  Ten mommies will receive a gift pack full of goodies, pictured below.

2016 MBP Gift Swap Gift Pack

I’m really hoping and praying to be among the winners. If I win, I would love to share the products included in the gift pack with my loved ones so they too can try them out and hopefully, include them in their future shopping lists.

Here are the brands who made this year’s gift giving more bountiful:

Contadina
Tupperware
Lorenzana Lorins Patis and Lorins Bagoong Alamang Guisado
myPhone watch
VillaDelConte chocolates
Arla
Poetry Magnets

Now, let me tell you about my MBP Gift Swap experience.

I got my package from Nina Sogue of The Balancing Act (http://www.ninasogue.com/) on the night of December 14. I had a funny story of how I got my gift. My son and I were at my parents’ house when a rider from Grab Express texted me and said that he was already in our area. He was asking about our exact location. I freaked out because I thought that I accidentally booked a ride. I texted back and said that I didn’t request for a ride. At that time, I misconstrued Grab Express to be the same as that of Grab Car, which explained why I panicked. I checked on the notifications and history of the app on my phone. It did not reflect anything related to December 14. I called Customer Support to help me sort out the confusion. During the call, I heard my Dad talking to someone who was looking for me outside the gate. I went out while the call with the CS rep was still active. That was when the rider said that he was from Grab, he has a package for me, and that he’d been looking for our address for quite a while. That was when everything made sense! Ha! Nina, my MBP Gift Swap Partner, sent her gift for me through Grab’s courier service. That was also the time when I remembered that I indicated my parents’ home as the delivery address. I profusely apologized to the rider who, thankfully, wasn’t that upset at all. A little while later, I got a text from Nina asking if I was able to receive her gift. I said I did and that I freaked out throughout the process. She apologized and said that she didn’t text me prior to the delivery because she wanted to surprise me. I was indeed surprise! I told her that I made a boo boo on my part and was okay with it. I was actually laughing at what just happened – that made my gift swap experience amusingly memorable :)

Take a look at what sweet Nina gave me – the My Balanced Life Planner 2017.

This red, annual planner came with a handwritten note from Nina. Instead of using a stationery, she used a black, speacialty paper and used a blue green metallic pen (if I’m not mistaken, or am I color blind?) to tell me why she chose the planner, a little something about herself and her blogging journey. Her choice of medium in sharing her story gave me a glimpse of her creativity and interesting personality. It prompted me to visit her blog, The Balancing Act. Nina’s blog has that neat layout and at the same time, exudes     creativity and vibrance. Go ahead and see it for yourself!

Nina, a young mom to a little charming boy, started her blog in February 2016. According to her, before putting out her thoughts in a public blog, she used to pour out her heart on a planner. That is why she decided to give me one. I have also noticed that the name of the planner, My Balanced Life, somehow shows congruence to Nina’s blog title, The Balancing Act. Nina’s blog has become her passion project where she shares her experiences as she tries to juggle different roles at the same time – being a mom, employee, a curious soul and a dreamer.

I commend Lani, Louisa and Joy for coming up with the MBP Gift Swap! It surely is a fun way to get to know the mommies in our community – we had a glimpse of each other’s personal lives and learn a thing or two about another mom’s blogging journey. I also enjoyed shopping for gifts for my other gift swap partner and crafting my letter and notes for her. Most of all, I felt like a kid again while I waited in eager anticipation to receive my gift :)

I will definitely join next year’s #MBPGiftSwap of #MommyBloggersPH. I hope that there will be more members of our growing community who will participate in the coming years so that we will be able to get know each other and, of course, spread the Holiday cheer!

Merry Christmas to all! :)

Celebrating Thanksgiving and Christmas with Fellow Mom Bloggers

3 December 2016. Mommy bloggers took time off from their busy schedules to celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas at the Pancake House in Tomas Morato, Quezon City filling the place with happy chatter and friendly banter.

15272232_1246371935422691_120131528247042509_o

This year, the ladies behind the Mommy Bloggers Philippines (MBP) have come up with an intimate gathering of 20 mommies from the group. Just to clarify and also as explained by Louisa,  one of the admins of MBP – the party was much smaller this year as compared to the previous ones because  the demands of their responsibilities in MBP as well as that of their respective jobs required a bigger chunk of their time. Putting it into perspective, their busyness at MBP could mean that more and more brands are tapping our MBP community, paving the way for mommies who blog to share their views and opinions on certain products and services.

MBP Ladies
The Women Behind MBP: Joy, Louisa and Lani

There may be a few of us who gathered last Saturday but we will still be able to celebrate Christmas with the rest of the mommies of MBP through the exciting Christmas Gift Swap. I can’t wait to share about it in my next post. :)

Going back to my party post…..

The party was scheduled to take place from 11am to 3PM. I came in a little after 11 and saw a few mommies at the venue with the crew from Pancake House bringing in food from the main restaurant next door.  Julianne, our official photographer from When Worlds Collide was already there capturing moments as they transpire. This lady is so good at capturing beautiful candid moments! Just look at all the photos that I used in this post!

15385534_1246372345422650_7633403214390086641_o

I like how the whole party was set up – from the venue arrangements to the seat plan. Buzy Bee Bouquets Balloons did a great job in decorating the function room of the Pancake House. It was elegantly decorated with white balloons and silver Christmas ornaments, which gave a winter vibe to the place. The MBP Ladies have devised the seating arrangements in such a way that each of us will be sitted next to someone new. I was seated near the end of the table with Nhessie on my left and Jhanis on my right. I’ve seen and chatted with Nhessie before in the previous events that I went to but it was only at the party that I got to know her better. That woman was so full of energy! I really had fun being her seatmate. I was also able to talk to Jhanis, whom I only knew through the posts that she shares on our FB group. It was nice to have finally met her and talked to her. She’s very poised, sophisticated and eloquent.

There were a few games that made us all giddy and excited. Too bad, I didn’t win in any of them. I will be more competitive next time :) We all won in the raffle where each one of us either won a goodie bag or GC. Some of the mommy bloggers were so blessed that day that they were also able to take home big ticket items.

I had a lovely time with my fellow mommy bloggers at the recent Thanksgiving Party at the Pancake House. I’m happy to have new acquaintances and reconnect with the old ones. I have learned something from the tidbits that they shared about their blogging journey, mom life and work-from-home hustle.

A Day at the Science Circus

The beauty of homeschooling is that we can go on field trips whenever and wherever we can. So, one fine Saturday, we traveled to Taguig to check out The Mind Museum’s fifth travelling exhibition, the Science Circus. It’s such a blessing that we all have All-Day Passes, which also gave us access to the exhibits inside The Mind Museum.

Science Circus - Entrance

The Science Circus is situated outside the main museum, in the middle of the J.Y. Campos Park. As soon as my son saw the entrance to the Circus, he squealed in delight and couldn’t wait to get inside. When we got in, I thought that there was not much to explore as the set-up was not as big as that of the previous Dino Play. I was wrong. Our little boy couldn’t get enough of the interactive exhibits. My husband and I also had fun tinkering at the elements inside the Science Circus. The elements may seem ordinary but it sure challenged us how to make them work and how everything fits in.

My son’s favorite is the Deception Perception. Check out our IG video below. He just kept on lining up again and again just so he could play inside the odd-shaped room and marvel at how the balls would roll through the trough and into the wire basket.

Science Circus - Inside the Odd Room
Our smiles barely hid our dizziness! It was really a challenge to keep our balance inside the Deception Perception room.

Science Circus - Colorful Foam Puzzles

Here’s another one of my son’s favorites. I actually loved this exhibit too for its cushioned floor gave comfort to my tired feet. My kid spent a lot of time in this exhibit. He wanted to build a fort so he kept on putting the pieces on top of each other then he would get on top and let himself fall down and roll on the floor. Silly little boy! This is also where he was able to find a playmate, another boy who looked like a child of an expat. He’s a bit older than my son and I admired that he played nice and was a bit patient knowing that he’s playing with a younger kid. Praying for more children like him :)

Science Circus - Tangrams

I have played with Tangrams before but I didn’t know that they are called until we visited the Science Circus. See, it pays to go on educational tours, because we not only learn a lot but it also reinforces what we think we already know.

Science Circus - Solving Tangrams

Science Circus - Automaton

Science Circus - Automaton 2

This exhibit is so fun! All you have to do is rearrange the discs and gears in each segment. Once you have figured out the correct set-up, the segment would move.

Below are more photos that we had from the time of our visit.

Science Circus - Benhams Disk

Science Circus - Shape Sorter

Liked what you see and read from my post? Go ahead and take your whole family to The Mind Museum’s Science Circus! Your trip would all be worth it because you will not only learn a thing or two but you will have fun tinkering with the elements as well.

PRESS RELEASE

Science Circus POSTER_eBLAST 111716

MANILA, Philippines – Be ready to #EnterTheScienceCircus!

Science Circus: Step Right Up! is the 5th traveling exhibition of The Mind Museum, supported in part by Mastercard, Limkaco Industries, Uratex, and Thompson Hardware and Lighting Center.

The Science Circus: Step Right Up! showcases the amusing, the peculiar, and the extraordinary in our everyday experiences, in the form of interactive exhibits that deceive the senses and boggle the mind.

While the nearly 250-year history of the circus abounds with awe-inspiring demonstrations of physical skill – such as high-flying aerial artists, to death-defying daredevils – the Science Circus challenges our traditional notions of a circus by focusing on the mind’s “acrobatic” perceptual tricks.

As the guests enter the exhibition, they are welcomed by a festive, colorful façade which sets the tone for the sights and sounds they are about to experience. These interactive exhibits are displayed simultaneously in three adjacent Rings. Guests can go in any of the Rings in the order they please.

Ring One, or Deception Perception is a menagerie of exhibits that will prompt you to question whether to see is to believe. Can you always trust your senses? Is what you see as real as it seems? Can your brain produce motion where there is none? Your first venture into the Circus will unveil the “blindness” of your mind’s eye.

Ring Two highlights Pieces of Incredible Engineering, where guests can engage their minds in puzzles and relish how math and art come together. This central area is animated by simple machines, and engages guests in activities that evoke their inner engineer.

Last but not least, Ring Three is Encounters with the Masters, where guests can interact with and learn the secrets of the Masters of Illusion. They can take on the challenges posed by each Master, and discover how our brains can be ensnared by smoke and mirrors.

Visit the Science Circus: Step Right Up! exhibition right now for another wonderful ride through the world of Science! To make it even more enticing, a special treat awaits!

Together with Mastercard, The Mind Museum offers something enticing for visitors! Use your Mastercard and avail of a 3+1 treat to any admission ticket to the Museum or its special exhibitions. See posters for full details. Until December 30, 2016 only.

The Science Circus: Step Right Up! exhibition vividly illustrates how our everyday experiences are full of delightful secrets that we can uncover, to discover more about ourselves and the world around us. Let’s all have fun together! See you there!

The St James Christmas Bazaar 2016 Starts Today!

I consider this as our annual tradition when my husband and our little one would come along. The first time that we went to the St James Christmas Bazaar as a family was when I was still babywearing. I strapped my son onto my chest to make it easier for us to navigate the Cuenca Community Center of Ayala Alabang Village. I thought that it would be cozy for my baby and safe at the same time. He was fine for a while but then I had to unstrap him when he got sweaty and uncomfortable. His Dad and I took turns carrying him around. That’s because hundreds of concessionaires and countless of shoppers going in and around the Center, it got a bit hot and in some sections, difficult to move around.

Despite the difficulties – parking, moving around, waiting for a vacant table for us to dine at – I keep coming back to this bazaar. Why? I always get the best bargains and great finds for my loved ones, for our home, and for myself :)

This year, the St James Christmas Bazaar would run from November 24 up to November 27 (Thursday to Sunday). Shoppers may come in as early as 9AM. The Center will close at 9PM. Entrance is FREE.

Things to keep in mind when going to the annual and biggest bazaar in the South:

  • If you can, come early to get better parking. The earliest that we’ve been there was an hour before lunch time. By that time, the center was already packed with shoppers and the streets leading to it were already full of cars. We ended up driving around and got a parking slot on a street that leads to Rustan’s Fresh. From there, we walked a few meters going to the center.
  • Wear comfortable clothes and bring an extra shirt and mini-fan. You are bound to get sweaty with all the walking!
  • Bring bottles of water to keep yourself and your companions hydrated and to save on drinks when you eat at the food shops.
  • Have a list of what you want to buy. There’s a wide variety of stuff that you can buy at this bazaar – clothes, trinkets, houseware, toys, decor plus a whole lot more. We even got our RFID card from the Petron booth last year. If you want to be within your budget, better have your list with you so you don’t get into impulsive buying.
  • Bring your own sturdy shopping bag.
  • Be mindful of your valuables, that includes your kids :) Don’t keep all of your shopping money in your wallet. When I go shopping on crowded places, I feel safe putting my money on different pockets.
  • The football field near the center is open to the public. Take a breather with all the shopping and take your kids there so they too can relax and have some fun :)

Can’t wait to go! See you there!

Kathryn and Liza’s Kitchen Best Friend

PRESS RELEASE

The kitchen used to be a scary place for young people and cooking was a daunting task reserved for mothers and household helps. But technology played a role in guiding people around the kitchen. Nowadays, new cooks search online for cooking videos or check out “food hacks” to be able to produce any dish they want that they can, in turn, show off on social media.

Liza and Kathryn

Young celebrities Kathryn Bernardo and Liza Soberano also enjoy cooking for their loved ones. They are the newest tandem to endorse AJI-NO-MOTO® Umami Seasoning. Apart from what can be found in the Internet, Kathryn and Liza became more confident cooks because they can rely on a brand of seasoning to make delicious home-cooked dishes by bringing out the natural goodness of food. Experienced cooks or kitchen newbies can make AJI-NO-MOTO® their best friend in the kitchen – an ally in serving nourishing and enjoyable dishes for the whole family.

The new AJI-NO-MOTO® TV Commercial features three (3) dishes to show the versatility of the product in making all kinds of dishes delicious. Among the dishes are the Omurice, a Japanese-inspired meal composed of rice and omelet, Kathryn’s Adobong Puti recipe, a different take on the classic adobo without soy sauce and the all-time favorite comfort food Beef Nilaga.

AJI-NO-MOTO® can be widely used in a variety of dishes because it has no smell or specific flavor of its own and can therefore be used to enhance the original flavor of food. This is a safe and quality product that is made from natural crops like sugar cane, corn or cassava and manufactured through the natural process of fermentation. AJI-NO-MOTO® enhances taste of food by providing umami taste. Umami is the fifth basic taste also described as rich, savory and ‘malinamnam’ derived from food rich in glutamate like tomatoes, cheese, mushrooms, ham and seafood.
