The Baby Company Re-opens Store at Rockwell

Baby Company, the Baby Specialist, has recently re-opened its store at the Power Plant Mall in Rockwell. This baby boutique was conceptualized by SM and it has everything that a Mom like me would ever need for her little one. Baby Company offers a wide selection of fashion apparels, personal care, toys, nursery furniture, home safety, and travel accessories. The Baby Company did a good job in curating brands for every product category. Brands include Philips Avent, Graco, Disney, Maclaren, Pigeon, Chicco, Dr. Brown’s, Tommee Tipee, Safety 1st, Lamaze and Fisher Price. They also have in-house brands like Lulu, Baby Clean, BabyCo, Picolo, Ollin, and PlaySmart. If only my husband was with us at that time to look after our very active little boy, I would have leisurely shopped for Louiji’s necessities and plenty of cute stuff!

Baby Company at Power Plant

The Baby Company is located at the third level of Power Plant Mall. It is on the right end, where Toys ‘R Us and Powerville are located.  I like the layout of this baby store for its spacious and modern style. It has a number of aisles containing a variety of mom and baby products but the layout makes it convenient for shoppers to move around and find what they are looking for. Every section is labelled with either the product category or the brand name.

Baby Company - Adorable Displays from the Window

The store at Rockwell has a visually appealing display window which gives shoppers a good glimpse of what’s inside the boutique. Look, they even have installment plans for some of the items!

Baby Company - Wooden Crib and Accessories

Cribs of different types are also available at Baby Company. Parents can buy everything that they need for their baby’s first bed at the store.

Baby Company - Mom Card

The Mom Card is a must-have for all the loyal shoppers of the Baby Company. It is available for only Php100 and moms can get rebates, exclusive offers, take part in special events and other privileges.

Baby Company - Purple Walker

Walkers of varying designs and colors are also available at the Baby Company. The cute purple walker that Louiji was pushing in the photo above is perfect for baby girls. It also has a simple set of toys in front which the little ones may play with.

The following are multi-function walkers which has more toys attached and are equipped with stoppers that parents can take advantage of for when they are feeding their baby or want the little one to stay in place.

I hope that car seats will be valued by parents and authorities as much as folks overseas do. Car seats play a vital role in keeping the little ones safer during travel. Car seat accessories are also available at the Baby Company.

The Baby Company also offers cute nursery decor. Below are wall decals that may be purchased for as low as Php50.

Here are an assortment of knap sacks for the kiddies. I’d love to get one for our Louiji as it would fit perfectly into his body. These backpacks have added straps that keep the shoulder straps from falling off. They come in adorable designs.

Happy 70th Birthday Thomas the Train!

Happy 70th Birthday, Thomas! Thomas the Tank Engine will be celebrating his birthday on September 27 at the SM Mall of Asia Atrium with all the kids and the young at heart who have known and came to love this Really Useful Engine.  Check out the poster below to find out how you can be part of the upcoming festivities.

Thomas' 70th Birthday Bash

I have discovered Thomas and Friends through my nephew. His toddler years were filled with watching the adventures of the blue steam engine on TV and having toys, bags and stuff bearing his favorite train. The fascination and endearment was passed on to my own little boy. Louiji enjoys watching Thomas and Friends and gets giddy each time I sing its theme song. My nephew has passed on his precious Thomas toys to my son who simply loves playing with them. The bulky Thomas train in the photo below is my toddler’s favorite. This chunky, battery-operated train moves and turns around whenever it bumps into an object. It keeps our little one on his toes as he chase Thomas around.

Big Smile with Thomas

Louiji was amazed with his little Thomas train. He was inspecting the bottom to find out where the steaming sound and music comes from. This piece actually comes with a railway but we rarely take it out because the little boy delights in seeing Thomas move around the house.

Checking out Thomas

Louiji has his own favorites among the Thomas and Friends episodes. He watches them over and over. I like it that the show goes beyond providing entertainment for the kids. Each episode conveys the value of friendship, teamwork and fair play.

Of Breastfeeding and Milk Sharing

My son is 2 years and 7 months old already and I am proud to share that we are still breastfeeding! Breastfeeding a toddler has its challenges but the benefits that we reap far outweigh the difficulties. Being able to breastfeed my son for this long is such a big blessing to our family. It is very beneficial for my growing boy and every feeding is an instant bonding time for us. Also, since I’m a breastfeeding, work-at-home mom, we save a lot of money because we don’t have to buy formula milk, feeding bottles and spend time and effort in washing and sterilising them.

While there is a growing community of breastfeeding mommies and babies, there are mothers who wanted to breastfeed their little ones but are unable to do so. Some cannot produce enough milk for their offspring while others have health conditions that prevent them from giving that precious milk to their babies. This is where the concept of milksharing comes in. If you are a breastfeeding momma who has an overflowing supply of breastmilk, you may want to participate in the upcoming Mommy Milkshare event this coming Saturday, September 5 at New Manila, QC. Read more about it from the press release below.

PRESS RELEASE

Mommy Milkshare: A MilkDrive for Moms Who Care

“Breastmilk is the best for babies” — most, if not all, moms have probably heard this at one point in their lives. The statement is 100% true, of course, which is why the World Health Organization (WHO) states the following in its report on “Global strategy on infant and young child feeding”:

Breastfeeding is an unequalled way of providing ideal food for the healthy growth and development of infants; it is also an integral part of the reproductive process with important implications for the health of mothers. As a global public health recommendation, infants should be exclusively breastfed for the first six months of life to achieve optimal growth, development and health.

Thereafter, to meet their evolving nutritional requirements, infants should receive nutritionally adequate and safe complementary foods while breastfeeding

continues for up to two years of age or beyond. Exclusive breastfeeding from birth is possible except for a few medical conditions, and unrestricted exclusive breastfeeding results in ample milk production.”

Bearing this in mind, two breastfeeding-advocate-minded local enterprises are holding a post-Breastfeeding Awareness Month event to help provide breastmilk to needy babies, namely “Mommy Milkshare: A MilkDrive for Moms Who Care.” This will take place on from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on September 5, 2015, at The Parenting Emporium, 29 1st Street, New Manila, Quezon City.

MommyMilkshare-1

The beginnings of a noteworthy event

“It all started when Jem Perez-Chua and Geraldyn Perez, the owners of Honeysuckle Philippines, approached us with this idea to ‘give back’ by organizing a milkletting activity,” Maricel Cua, co-founder of The Parenting Emporium (TPE) shares.

“We gladly agreed to co-organize because, as part of our advocacy on nutrition, one of our beneficiaries is the TPE Milksharing Hub*. The TPE Milksharing Hub fully supports milkletting activities like this, and responsible milk sharing,” she continues.

“We have participated in several milkletting efforts organized by local governments, hospitals, and even private groups. All collected milk from this particular event will go to the Fabella Milk Bank.”

Jem shares why she and her sister Geraldyn though of holding the MilkShare event. “We’ve been distributing Honeysuckle breastmilk bags for over a year now and given the reception of Filipina moms to our brand, we want to give back as well,” she says.

“We found out that the concept of breastmilk donation is not common knowledge, and some moms actually end up with a lot of ‘old frozen breastmilk’ because their babies simply weren’t able to consume all of their stored milk.

“So we thought — wouldn’t it be wonderful if another baby was able to benefit from that stored breastmilk instead? It could possibly even save lives!”

In addition, Jem and Geraldyn feel that there are “very few brands / organizations that are willing to set up breastmilk drives, because these events are really non-profit.” “So we want to help however way we can in something we feel very strongly about,” she adds.

Raising awareness, spreading the word about the advocacy

As self-declared “big supporters of breastfeeding,” Jem and Geraldyn hope they can make the Mommy MilkShare event bigger in succeeding years.

“For this first event, we reached out to The Parenting Emporium for guidance and lots of help,” Jem shares. “We found out that they have so much experience in this type of activity and we have none!

“The Parenting Emporium even took care of looking for speakers exclusively for the mom-donors to listen to,” Jem continues. “So it’s really great that we are both very aligned on this endeavor, because we just really want to help moms in whatever way we can. We hope more brands can join us in this cause in the future.”

The Mommy Milkshare MilkDrive: Uniting moms for the “breast cause” ever

“We know the benefits of breastfeeding extend beyond just the first year of life so we want to raise awareness about the importance of donating excess breastmilk of moms — because there are so many babies who need the milk,” Jem emphasizes.

“We don’t want moms to ever consider feeding their babies with formula milk — especially in the few months, just because they think there is no other solution.”

Jem adds that donating breastmilk is very fulfilling because “you know that you are nurturing the life of another baby in need, on top of your own baby.”

“We hope that we will be able to help a lot of moms and babies with what we can collect and donate, in partnership with The Parenting Emporium,” she concludes.

Event details to take note of

The Mommy Milkshare milkletting event is open to all breastfeeding moms who wish to donate their milk. “There is no registration fee, but it is exclusive for breastmilk donors. Mommies should bring frozen milk, expressed within 3 months, and should also be willing to be screened,” Maricel expounds.

Aside from the milkletting activity, participants can expect different activities as well.

“Jem and Geraldyn wanted to help mothers at different levels, so we came up with the idea of free one-on-one consultations for 4 moms (the first 4 to register) with a volunteer International Board Certified Lactation Consultant or IBCLC,” Maricel shares. “There will also be relevant talks and lootbags for donors.”

Below is the list of talks scheduled for the event:

10a.m.-12nn: Developmental Milestones of Your Infant/Toddler (Speaker: Tanya Velasco of Guru Firm {Early Childhood and Family Life Experts})

1-2p.m.: Time Management Skills for the Busy Mom (Speaker: Candice Cipullo of “The Travelling Maybahay” Blog)

2-3p.m.: Overcoming Breastfeeding Challenges (Speaker: Joyce Martinez, RN, MSN, IBCLC)

3-4p.m.: Managing Mommy Guilt (Speaker: MommyProofing Coach Joy Dejos, Certified Professional Coach)

It is hoped that through this event for moms by moms, the message of “growing together as parents” will be shared to all, and that parents — especially mothers — will be encouraged to protect, promote and support breastfeeding, and share what they have with others.

To pre-register for the event, kindly contact the TPE Events Hotline: 0917-8110821. *Additional information about The TPE Milksharing Hub

Even before the official launch of The Parenting Emporium last July 2015, its founders Maricel Cua and Beng Feliciano had already been committed to milk sharing, as one of the advocacies under their former business.

“As breastfeeding advocates and peer counselors, we discovered the need to provide expert-backed information to breastfeeding moms and breastmilk to needy babies,” Maricel shares.

“Through the community that they had built at the time, which was composed of mostly nursing moms, that need was soon answered — through the generosity of the moms who gave their precious breastmilk donations,” Beng adds.

Maricel and Beng emphasize that all donations were — and still are — conscientiously screened and pasteurized to make sure that the milk is clean and safe, especially for sick babies.

“Under what is now known as the TPE Milksharing Hub, pasteurized breastmilk is distributed to babies whose mothers may be unable to provide them with sufficient breastmilk for some reason,” Maricel says.

Beng stresses that they make sure that the mothers who receive breastmilk are given breastfeeding counseling and support so that they will eventually be able to provide breastmilk for their own babies’ needs.

“This is just one way by which we hope to ‘give back’ to others,” Maricel shares.

If you are interested in donating your excess milk to the TPE Milk Sharing Hub, you may contact Maricel Cua at 0917-6247246, or Katrina Mitra at (02) 7253723 / (02) 7386272. You can also send an email to theparentingemporium@gmail.com. *Important reminders: Kindly prepare a Hepatitis-HIV profile that is less than six months old. If you have none, testing will be provided for free. Donated breastmilk should be less than three months old from date of expression.

Amino Fres-C Instant Drink Mix

It was a blessing that we received our stash of Amino Fres-C at a time when we need it the most. It was when my son and I were both down with the flu. And you know how it is with flu. Fever, lack of appetite, dryness of the mouth, fatigue and a host of other symptoms that made us lie in bed all day. It was a good thing that my husband was spared from the virus. He took care of us until we were both healthy and well. When we were still sick, my husband took the new instant drink mixes that  Ajinomoto sent to us and prepared a pitcher of juice for a couple of days just to make sure that our son and I will stay hydrated and that we get lots of Vitamin C in order for us to recover swiftly from flu. We started with the Mango flavor and I loved that it’s way better than the other brands of the same flavor. The Mango flavor of Amino Fres-C is not too sweet and it smells of fresh mangoes, too. I actually finished two glasses of it! I had the opposite experience with other mango flavored instant juice drinks. They are too sweet that I would only have a few sips or I would end up with a sore throat.

amino Fres-C MANGO

We had the Pineapple flavor the next day. It tastes just right and it smells of real pineapples, too. It has become my favorite! Our little boy loved it too that he asked for another serving after his first :)

amino Fres-C PINEAPPLE
My favorite among the 3 flavors

Yesterday, I was having an itchy throat so my good husband prepared a pitcher of the Orange flavor of Amino Fres-C. Today, I woke up and I feel better :)

amino Fres-C ORANGE

The Amino Fres-C Instant Drink Mix will soon be available in supermarkets. They are very affordable at Php8 for every sachet. It would definitely fit into our budget and would enable us to serve healthy juice drinks for our kids on a regular basis. Read the press release below to know more about this refreshing juice drink.

Lessen Stress at School with the new “amino Fres-C”

School is a wonderful place to explore and learn new things but parents are well-aware that this place can also be a major source of stress for kids. A school day begins and ends with passing through bumpy roads and enduring slow-moving traffic. Kindergarteners are not excused from pushing trolleys that carry heavy loads. Students have to juggle various seat works, assignments, recitations and quizzes for 8-9 subjects. In a nutshell, going to school is eternally beneficial but it is hard work!

Parents can instill the value of diligence and patience to lessen the hurdles kids face at school. Feed them with knowledge that can widen their understanding and sharpen their minds. Be involved in their school life. Assist in checking if assignments and projects are done correctly and completely and be on guard for any emotional or physical traumas they might be experiencing within and outside school premises. Extracurricular activities can also help build self-esteem and develop healthy social life for most school children as they learn to interact with other people.

Being sick or sickly is a big burden to students as they need the strength and energy to keep up with the daily demands of school. Exercise and good diet are essential in maintaining physical well-being. Parents must take time to engage their kids in fun physical activities and prepare delicious and healthy meals.

Responsible parents naturally go for safe and quality ingredients, but to make meals more enjoyable and nourishing for school children, they need to introduce variety of food ingredients and expand cooking methods from only frying to also sautéing, steaming, blanching and boiling. If frying is unavoidable, it is recommended to observe proper frying temperature (365-375’F) to decrease oil absorption. Test by dropping a small piece of food into the oil; the temperature is right if the piece of food rises above the oil within 3-5 seconds.

The new “amino Fres-C” Instant Juice Drink Mix is a great addition to kids’ baon. This is the only powdered juice drink that is packed with Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAA) with Glutamine and Arginine. These specific amino acids are building blocks of protein that maintain energy levels, support muscle growth and repair, and toughen immune system – making this drink perfect for sustaining kids’ demanding schedule at school. “amino Fres-C” is 70% less calories compared to other juice brands, so they get to enjoy the real fruit taste of its orange, pineapple and mango variants, without the unnecessary calories. The new “amino Fres-C” is available in local supermarkets for only PhP 8.00 per 1 liter pack.

Try to complement “amino Fres-C” fruit juice with these tasty and healthy baon recipes from Ajinomoto:

Cheesecake for Breakfast

Yes, we had one and it was sooo good! It was the best tasting blueberry cheesecake that I have tasted, so far. There’s not an inch of  umay factor in it. It is neither too sweet nor too creamy. I actually had to exercise extreme self-control in order to save some for my husband and our son. The best thing about this unforgettable cheesecake is that it was homemade with love!

Cheesecake
The cheesiest gift I have ever received!

I happen to work with Joy of Joybites.com, the very talented lady who made this mouthwatering dessert. In one of our group discussions about cinnamon, she asserted that omitting that spice from the cheesecake recipe would not make a difference in the final taste at all. I, for one, am not a fan of cinnamon and would avoid bread and pastry that have it in the ingredients. Given that, I readily agreed with Joy’s statement. To further prove her assertion, she said that she would bake a no-cinnamon cheesecake for the team on our next meeting. The day of our meeting came and each of us received a dainty box of cheesecake. I took a snap of it the moment Joy handed it to me.  I know that it would be either eaten right away or would get tossed in transit so I needed to capture a photo of how this edible gift was presented nicely.

I served Joy’s blueberry cheesecake for breakfast the following day because I know that it would be perfect for my husband’s cup of coffee and my mug of warm milk. And it was! Our little boy had some, too. What I liked most about this delectable dessert is that it has the right mix of fruity and creamy in it. I also super love that it does not have even a dash of cinnamon in it. My son doesn’t like that spice too and he would grimace whenever he was asked to have a bite of anything that has cinnamon in it.

Should you want to know how heavenly that blueberry cheesecake was, get in touch with Joy through her website :)

Vita Cubes Are Jelly Candies Not Vitamins

“Can I have one more?” my nephew asked when I took a bag of Vita Cubes Singles from the ref. When I told him that yes he could have another one, he was amazed. Apparently, he was told that he can only have one cube each day because that’s how vitamins must be taken. I have discovered that it was a common misconception of this jelly candy that is a product of Rebisco, one of the country’s major players in the biscuit and snack industry. I went over IG and found college students and young professionals indicating in their posts that they’re lucky to have Vita Cubes to help them get through their hectic schedules. Folks, time to read the label and know the facts about Vita Cubes!

I am so happy to have discovered Vita Cubes because I can now let my son indulge in jelly candies without worrying too much about sugar overload. He enjoys munching on these vitamin-fortified jelly candies! Our stash came in handy when we both had the flu. We would chew on Vita Cubes after taking our meds and the awful taste would be replaced by that of the fruity candy. We really love Vita Cubes and I would definitely include this in my grocery list. I’m sure that my child would ask for Vita Cubes on our next trip to the neighborhood convenience store :)

Have you tried the Vita Cubes fruit flavored jelly candies?

The Wonders of Organic Baby Wipes

I once wished of winning a shopping spree of baby wipes. It has not come true, yet. But, thanks to the Mommy Bloggers Philippines for allowing me to take part in the product review of the Organic Wipes that we get to have more than our usual stash of baby wipes!

Organic Baby Wipes
The Organic Baby Wipes are available in packs of 20, 30 and 80 sheets

If you’re a mom, you would know the importance of having disposable wipes on hand. Ever since I became a mommy, I have become so dependent on baby wipes for keeping my child clean. I use it to wipe my son’s bum after a nappy change. I use it to wipe his hands clean before eating when there is no chance to wash them with running water. When we’re out and about and he gets too sweaty, I use wipes for his face and body before changing his clothes. That’s how important wipes are in our life. We use it all the time.

Organic Baby Wipes in 20s
Brought Organic Baby Wipes on our day out to keep little hands clean

I’m so happy to have the opportunity to try out the Organic Baby Wipes. It is devoid of Paraben, Alcohol, Chlorine or any harsh chemicals that may harm my little one’s sensitive skin. It smells good, too. I took a sheet of the Organic Wipes and loved that it smells like a baby’s bath soap. The scent is not overwhelming which is good as it won’t trigger my allergic rhinitis. I tried using a brand of wipes which has the scent of a powder and I would sneeze each time I pull out a sheet. The Organic Wipes has cloth-like sheets that are soft to touch and ensures that only the gentlest material gets in contact with my son’s delicate skin. I have proven that it’s safe to use on the face and body as I have tried to use it on myself. When we were out for the weekend, I also used it to freshen up my little explorer. Thankfully, he did not develop a rash or any kind of skin irritation from it. And because we have more than enough of the Organic Wipes, we shared it with Granny, who has skin asthma, and Baby E, my eight-month old niece. They were both very satisfied with how skin-friendly this organically made product is.

Don’t just take my word for it. Go and try it for yourself and your little ones. The Organic Wipes are available at the following stores:

  • Makati Supermarket (Alabang)
  • Babyland (Festival Supermall, Eastwood, Shaw)
  • Babysteps (Festival Supermall)
  • Baby Zone (Fisher Mall)
  • Fisher Mall Department Store
  • Pioneer Center

Melawares and Urban Kitchen Present Mommy and Me

Last May 9, 2015, Melawares and Urban Kitchen presented Mommy and Me, a kickoff of its mall tour that is dedicated in honoring mothers. This event was launched at the SM Southmall in time for the celebration of Mother’s Day. It was an event of fun-filled activities for moms and kids.

Mother's Day at the Melawares and Urban Kitchen event

Upon registration from the entrance, families lined up to have their picture taken at the photobooth courtesy of Aliyah Smile. Some of the children flocked to the Design Your Own Plate station while others had their faces painted with their favorite characters. The little girls went to another station to have their own nail art.

The program started with an introduction from the lovely Issa Litton. She gave an overview of Melawares and Urban Kitchen products.

After that, Carla Perlas, Regional Editor-in-Chief of The Asian Parent, a popular digital parenting magazine, talked about online rakets that mommies can take on. Being a WAHM myself, I appreciate Carla’s presentation and actually learned more from it.

Next to that was a contest for making the most creative baon using the Disney-themed cookie cutters and the high quality melamine tableware of Melawares plus the modern and stylish tableware of Urban Kitchen. My fellow blogger from the Mommy Bloggers Philippines network, Mommy Lariza Garcia of the Mom’s World of Arts and Happiness won the contest! Just look at her plate below and you’ll see why :)

Chef Arabella Padilla, a pastry chef and Kitchen Superstar finalist, showed us how to make Oreo Cheesecake Cookies and a drink called Sweet Surrender. These were easy to follow recipes which make use of a few ingredients. Perfect for busy mommies! Chef Arabella said that she used 1:1 proportions during the demo so mommies would easily memorize the ingredients and steps without having to write it down. I have tasted her cookies and I loved it. I will make some soon and I’m sure that the kids will love them.

In between the activities mentioned above, exciting prizes were given away in a series of raffles. A lot of moms won either the Melawares Starter Set or the Urban Kitchen’s Pitcher and Tumbler Set. My Mom, whom I invited to come with me to the event, and I didn’t won anything from the raffle. By the way, my Mom has been a loyal and proud owner of Melawares tableware for almost two decades. We got excited when the winner of the Elba Microwave Oven was being announced as Issa was keeping everyone at the edge of their seats by gradually revealing the identity of the winner. The lucky winner of that most coveted kitchen appliance is….not me. A giddy mommy carrying her son, rushed to the stage to claim her prize. I was not able to take note of her name for I started to fall into envy (exxag!).

Also, during the event, Melawares and Urban Kitchen had a special 10% discount for all of their products.

Join the Summer Reading Camp

I’ve been a reader ever since I have learned how to pronounce the words written on printed matter. Growing up, my parents have nurtured my love for reading by giving me new and pre-loved books. I am also married to a man who is passionate about reading. It is only natural then to share our love for reading to our little boy. I’ve been reading to him when he was still in my womb. He is two years old now and not a day would pass without me reading a story to him. We are also glad that he has shown interests in books as he would always leaf through the pages of his favorite books and babble as if he is reading the exact text. When he is old enough, I would like to take him to read aloud events such as that of the Summer Reading Camp, an advocacy project of Lia Del Castillo’s DiksyonaryoAtbp. Read more from her PR below.

Old Orchard Cranberry Juice for Healthy Kidneys

Being a breastfeeding mom, I do my best to avoid getting sick so I would not need to take medicines. There are medications that are safe for lactation but I want to err on the side of precaution. I still believe that prevention is better than cure. We all know that proper diet and exercise will keep illness at bay. But, with the abundance of different kinds of mouthwatering edibles, it is so hard to choose which food and beverages must we include in our “proper diet.” Fruits are definite must-haves in our daily diet. How then can we make sure that we are taking in adequate amounts of fruits every day that would be enough to keep us healthy? Let’s find out how Old Orchard Cranberry Juice can help us and keep our kidneys healthy at the same time.

Press Release
Keeping Healthy with Old Orchard Cranberry Juice

What’s in every serving of cranberry juice? Each eight-ounce serving of 100% Old Orchard Cranberry Juice counts as two servings of fruit. Did you know that the American Cancer Society recommends that you eat five servings of fruits and vegetables each day? Old Orchard 100% Juices can help you meet your “Five-A-Day” goal.

Apart from getting our daily fruit intake requirement, Cranberry Juice helps prevent kidney disorder. Kidney failure is the 9th leading cause of death among Filipinos. One Filipino develops chronic renal failure every hour and there is more than 14,000 Filipino patients undergoing dialysis yearly.

Kidney 101

According to healthline.com, the kidneys are two bean-shaped organs that extract waste from blood, balance body fluids, form urine, and aid in other important functions of the body. They reside against the back muscles in the upper abdominal cavity and sit opposite each other on both sides of the spine. When it comes to components of the urinary system, the kidneys are multi-talented powerhouses of activity.

Some of the core functions of the kidneys include:

Waste excretion: There are many things your body doesn’t want inside of it, and the kidneys help get rid of some of them. The kidneys filter out toxins, excess salts, and urea, a nitrogen-based waste created by cell metabolism. Urea is synthesized in the liver and transported through the blood to the kidneys for removal.

Water level balancing: As the kidneys are key in the production of urine, they react to changes in the body’s water level throughout the day. As water intake decreases, the kidneys adjust accordingly and leave water in the body instead of helping excrete it.
Blood pressure regulation: The kidneys need constant pressure to filter the blood. When it drops too low, the kidneys increase the pressure. One way is by producing a blood vessel-constricting protein (angiotensin) that also signals the body to retain sodium and water. Both the constriction and retention help restore normal blood pressure.

Red blood cell regulation: When the kidneys don’t get enough oxygen, they send out a distress call in the form of erythropoietin, a hormone that stimulates the bone marrow to produce more oxygen-carrying red blood cells.

Acid regulation: As cells metabolize, they produce acids. Foods we eat can either increase the acid in our body or neutralize it. If the body is to function properly, it needs to keep a healthy balance of these chemicals. The kidneys do that, too.

How Healthy is Your Urinary Tract?

Because of all of the vital functions the kidneys perform and the toxins they encounter, the kidneys are susceptible to various problems. Acute kidney failure is a condition in which the kidneys suddenly lose their ability to function properly. This can occur for many reasons, including:

• Infection
• Blood-clotting disorders
• Decreased blood flow caused by low blood pressure
• Acute tubular necrosis, or death of the tubular cells that deliver urine to the ureters
• Autoimmune kidney disorders
• Urinary tract infections
• Complications from pregnancy

Under the Love Your Kidney Campaign, Old Orchard aims to build awareness to the importance of drinking cranberry juice. Cranberry Juice has been proven in several studies to reduce the risk of urinary tract infections or UTI due to the proanthrocyanidin content and hippuric acid that helps prevent the bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract. Cranberry Juice is not the cure for kidney diseases, but it is a way of preventing it from happening and worsening. Cranberry Juice acts as a defense against heart disease and contains anti-cancer properties, Vitamin C and dietary fiber. It also decreases the probabilities of having dental caries.

Old Orchard is recognized as the 2nd largest frozen juice brand and 4th largest bottled juice brand in the USA. Old Orchard has a wide selection that caters to different age groups from kids to adults.
